Clearing Your Search History
Did you know that a record of all your online activity is maintained on your computer? This includes data about all the websites that you visit, all the searches that you do, all your mail accounts with various providers and just about everything that you do online.
Does this thought leave you feeling a bit uncomfortable? We are not surprised if it does. It is highly recommended that everyone regularly clear their internet history and here are some reasons why:
Privacy
With the kind of software tools available these days anyone who is only moderately proficient with IT can have a peek into your online activity. Are you comfortable with the idea of your family, boss, kids, co-workers or support staff being able to see what sites you recently visited?
What websites you visit on the internet and what you do on them is strictly your personal business and nobody has the right to review it with your permission.
Security
Everyday we hear of newer, more complex and destructive computer viruses / internet worms being discovered. These viruses and worms are capable of extracting data from your internet history and sending them to their servers.
This data may include extremely sensitive financial information like your credit card numbers, your internet banking passwords, your transaction history and lots more. Such information can be maliciously used by third parties (called “Identity Theft”) leading to your financial loss, impact on your credit ratings or both.
There have also been recorded cases of hackers blackmailing individuals after about their learning intricate personal information from the victim’s internet history.
Computer Efficiency
Cookies
Most websites, including established brand names like Alexa and Yahoo, store something called “cookies” on your computer to keep track of your browsing habits. These cookies are then used to serve advertisements to you whenever possible.
Apart from the fact that the whole idea feels like an intrusive invasion of privacy, this practice also considerable slows down your browser leading to slower computing experience.
Disk Space
Moreover, all this data about what sites you visit gets stored on your hard drives itself. Generally this is stored in folders named ‘Temp’ or ‘Temporary Internet Files’. Slowly, but steadily, all this data occupies more and more of your disk space. Again, with lower proportion of free disk space computers tend to slow down considerably.
Fragmentation of data
Another important issue is fragmentation. It is a widely accepted fact that keeping Internet History speeds up fragmentation of disk drives. A “fragmented” disk drive is one where data is more cluttered. In such cases, the computer spends significant resources and memory in locating the cluttered files adversely affecting the performance,
These are only some of the reasons that cleaning up one’s internet history is highly recommended. Do not forget that prevention is always better than cure.
