Top Ten Ways To Erase Computer History
Computer history can become quite a sensitive issue when dealing in corporate environments or in conditions where you prefer to rather keep your data to your self.
10) Emptying Recycle Bin
More often than not, we delete sensitive data and forget about it completely. While we are busy with other things our precious, sensitive data is sitting in recycle bin waiting for anyone who wants to just open it and restore as he/she pleases.
It is recommended that the recycle bin be periodically removed.
9) Skip Recycle Bin
Instead of just pressing “del” button, if you press the “Shift” button at the time of deleting files, they are directly deleted instead of being sent to the Recycle Bin.
8) Permanent Delete Software
While the above methods are effective in their own limited ways, it should be noted that even after data is removed from the recycle bin it is possible to recover the data using “restore softwares”.
It is always recommended to use specialized software made specifically for the purpose of deleting data from hard drive without a trace.
7) Clearing and Turning Off Cookies
In order to prevent the websites from tracking our activity online it is recommended that all cookies be deleted and the browser’s privacy settings allow us to permanently stop accepting any more cookies from any website.
Of course, there always is the easier option to use softwares which automatically clean up your cookies for you.
6) Deleting Recent Files
A shortcut to any file that you open is created in the “Recent Items” list in the Start Menu pin-up. This is also true for any application opened in Windows Vista, which is pinned-up in Start Menu. The list of these shortcuts can be deleted from the “user folder”.
However, there can be problems with deleting permission and finding location of this folder, which is sometimes given the ‘Hidden’ attribute. It is always much easier to let use specialized software for this purpose.
5) “Private Sessions” in Internet Browsers
Several new web-browsers like now have a “Private Session” option (“Incognito Window” in Google Chrome) which makes sure no user history is stored by the browser.
That being said, using softwares which make all your sessions “Private Sessions” is always more convenient.
